Increased recycled toilet tissue use could save water and wood

Following an analysis by the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), tissue manufacturer Lucart says that doubling the annual national consumption of recycled toilet tissue in italy could lead to an annual saving of over five million cubic metres of water and 400 thousand tonnes of wood.

Currently around 1.5 million tonnes of tissue paper for hygienic and sanitary use are produced in Italy - only seven per cent using recycled materials.

During the EPD certification process on two toilet papers produced by Lucart the environmental advantages of paper made using recycled materials compared with virgin materials were ascertained. For each tonne of recycled paper produced there are a number of benefits:

• A reduction of 80 per cent in the consumption of renewable resources, with a saving of 4,060.9 kg of wood

• A reduction of 38 per cent in consumption of water resources, so 50.63 cubic metres of water;

• A saving of 404.50 kg of CO2, the gas that is one of the main culprits of climate change.
