European Cleaning & Hygiene Awards 2017 winners announced at Rome gala dinner

The winners of the prestigious European Cleaning & Hygiene Awards 2017 were announced at a gala dinner at the Parco dei Principi Grand Hotel in Rome on Thursday night, November 9.

The awards recognise standards of excellence in the professional cleaning sector Europe-wide. The winners were:

University of Wolverhampton and SmartTask: Best use of technology by contractors in their cleaning programmes, sponsored by Diversey Care. The university teamed up with technology solutions partner SmartTask to develop and implement an employee scheduling and remote workforce management solution. It covers a number of different teams and all campus operations.

Julius Rutherfoord & Co: Commitment to and investment in training, sponsored by Greenspeed. Julius Rutherfoord says training is at the heart of everything the company does. On-the-job training is tailored to client and staff needs and other skills such as maths and English are also on the programme.

FBD and Derrycourt Cleaning Specialists: Excellence in client/contractor partnerships. FBD is an insurance company and Derrycourt provides services to its 34 offices across Ireland. FBD was facing resource challenges and Derrycourt worked closely with its management to make necessary savings with as little impact on service as possible.

WE Italia SRL: Distributors - excellence in added value initiatives, sponsored by Lucart. WE Italia is a group of 37 distribution businesses covering the whole of Italy. The company is committed to sustainable development and along with its product ranges it promises technical advice and training onsite, process optimization, single invoicing and management efficiencies.

Markas best practice for sustainability, the Montichiari Hospital project: Sustainability - best practice in implementing principles throughout the business, sponsored by Werner & Mertz. Markas is a cleaning company that has obtained various environmental certifications. The company is committed to reducing the environmental impact of its services but also seeks to involve its employees - motivating them to adopt sustainable behavior not only at the workplace, but in their daily life too.

Maximum Impact, Breedweer Facilitaire Diensten: Workforce - excellence in employee relationships, diversity & inclusion, rewards programmes, etc. Breedweer is a facility services company that is also a social enterprise. Its aim is to get as many people to work as possible - it has employed 312 people who used to be on government benefits and 54 per cent of its staff have a work disability.

LIFE (Labour Intensive Facility Event) - ANIP Road Show: Best initiative raising the profile and perception of the professional cleaning sector - locally or on a wider level. ANIP is an association made up of cleaning companies. It created the Labour Intensive Facility Event (or LIFE) and the ANIP roadshow, both designed to raise awareness of the cleaning and facilities services sector in the business, political and media world.

BeSense, CSU: Groundbreaking technological innovation of the year, sponsored by Interclean Amsterdam. CSU is facilitating the switch to data driven cleaning with BeSense, a sensor device used in buildings to gather data in order to streamline facility services. Its simplicity makes it suitable for use in large and small buildings.

Jan-Hein Hemke, Facilicom UK: Inspirational leader of the year, sponsored by Truvox International. Jan-Hein would be the first to say Facilicom's achievements are not all due to his leadership but he sets the tone for the business with his strategic overview, interest in people and willingness to trust others to come to the right decision.

Avril McCarthy, Derrycourt Cleaning Specialists: Greatest individual contribution to driving up standards of excellence within a cleaning operation. Avril is general manager of the business however her day-to-day role sees her very much involved with all delivery aspects of contracts at the company's 600-plus client sites. She literally oversees all departments.

Adolf Kruse: the Lifetime Achievement Award, sponsored by Ceris Burns International.Kruse has had a career in the cleaning industry spanning 54 years. He always believed the structure of medium-sized companies in our industry could only be preserved through close cooperation among them. He then internationalized this way of thinking and his vision "think global, act local" took shape as he encouraged relationships between distributors and manufacturers to form international networks.

With his hard-working and determined personality he has earned respect from industry leaders for continually pursuing his beliefs and vision for a better business world.

Compère for the evening, and member of the judging panel Michelle Marshall, editor of European Cleaning Journal, said: "The European Cleaning and Hygiene Awards are a unique opportunity to highlight and celebrate the tremendous work being carried out by service providers, manufacturers and distributors across Europe. We're very proud to be involved in these awards which show that the industry is about so much more than ‘just cleaning'. The talent and dedication on show across the wide-ranging categories is testament to that."

Joining Michelle on the judging panel were: Johannes Bungart, director, BIV; Juan Diez de los Rioz de San Juan, president, ASPEL; and Lynn Webster, director, Lynn Webster Consultants.

The venue for the 2018 European Cleaning and Hygiene Awards was also announced at the dinner. Next year's event will take place in Berlin.

Along with the opportunity to network with the best in the European Cleaning and Hygiene sector, attendees were entertained by a motivational speech from Adrian Webster, author of Polar Bear Pirates - A Grown Up's Book for Kids at Work.

The awards, now in their second year, were launched by ECJ and are organised by EMG. Diversey Care is the event partner and Lucart is the silver sponsor for the 2017 awards.
