Robots on hospital service contract

International service company Serco is using a fleet of robots to carry out day-to-day tasks on its support service contract at the new Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Scotland. The robots are carrying clinical waste and cleaning operating theatres as well as delivering food and dispensing drugs.

The self-guided robotic vehicles operate in their own corridors around the hospital, separated from patients and staff - the hospital has also been designed to include lifts used exclusively by the robots. In the 16 operating theatres robotic scrubber dryers are cleaning the floors in order to allow cleaning staff to concentrate on surfaces and equipment.

Serco has been working in partnership with the National Health Service at Forth Valley for a number of years and in the new hospital the management expressed the intention to segregate patient and facilities management activity.
