Tork manufacturer SCA in Sweden CSR initiative

Tork manufacturer SCA has been working to improve hygiene in nursery schools as part of its CSR work in Sweden. The company recently ran a pilot study in collaboration with the Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control at two regional nurseries near Gothenburg. The aim of the study was to reduce the spread of infections in nurseries where small children are particularly vulnerable.

The study revealed that the nurseries used communal textile towels which posed a potential cross-contamination threat. Some washroom dispensers were found to be mounted too high for small children to use, while push-button soap dispensers were sometimes difficult for them to operate.

It was also discovered that toilet paper systems comprising ready-to-use sheets were preferred since some children found it difficult to tear paper from a large roll.

Based on the findings SCA has introduced a nursery brochure containing hands-on tips for good hand hygiene. The brochure is aimed at nursery teachers but also focuses on how to teach these methods to children. Representatives from the Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control have been visiting nurseries in the country to implement the training using the Tork brochure as a basis.
