World Toilet Summit starts in China

Yesterday saw the start of the 11th World Toilet Summit, being held this year in Haikou, capital of China's Hainan province.

During the three-day summit, representatives from relevant institutions and enterprises worldwide will look into ways to improve the world's toilets and sanitation conditions. Demonstrations of novel sanitaryware will also be held during the event.

The theme for this year's meeting is Toilet Civilization: Health, Tourism, Quality of Life. To coincide with the summit, the World Toilet Organization (WTO) and the Hainan Provincial Housing & Construction Department have launched the Toilet Design Award (TDA) to showcase innovative design in public toilet facilities.

WTO chief Jack Sim stressed that good toilet conditions can help promote the development of tourism, and he called for the building of more public toilets in tourist attractions in order to boost the tourist economy.
