Hollywood star Tilda Swinton was forced to cut short her latest Oscar bid to do a cleaning shift at her children's school in Scotland.

The actress flew back from Spain where she was promoting her latest film - We Need to Talk About Kevin - to scrub floors and wash windows at the school in Moray. Tilda's 14-year-old twins Honor and Xavier attend the private school.

Swinton explained: "This weekend I will clean my children's school. We don't have someone to do that. We're very small. We do it ourselves."

Alexandra McNamara, chair of the college of teachers, said Swinton took her responsibilities to the school very seriously. "There is a regular rota. In order to keep the fees down it's necessary for parents to take part in cleaning the school on a regular basis."
