Students raise £1,500 to send cleaner on Jamaica trip

A university cleaner in the UK is heading to Jamaica on a trip of a lifetime - funded by donations from the facility's students.

A group of Bristol University students set up an anonymous fundraising webpage and together stumped up €1800 to pay for Herman Gordon's trip. The cleaner has worked at the educational facility for 12 years.

Gordon came to the UK from Jamaica in 1967 with his nine siblings and will travel to Jamaica with his wife, Denise, to visit family. He broke down in tears when handed the donation envelope by a student.

"I am blessed and feeling good," he said. "I try to do my best with the students to help them. When I am cleaning the library I chat to them and give them advice. I try to encourage to them to do their best in life when they finish their studies."

Posts on the Just Giving page set up to fund Gordon's trip show warmth and appreciation for the cleaner who has been described by students as "the epitome of happiness".

"All year round, this man works for hours on end to provide us with a clean working space in which to study," reads one. "But most importantly his undying positive energy and chit-chat has managed to turn many students' dark days into positive ones filled with joy.

"Whether you're just feeling generally down and out or stressed out due to exams, Herman is always there to speak to you."
