Spanish cleaning sector sees rise in absenteeism

The Spanish cleaning sector has seen an increase in employee absenteeism of 53 per cent compared with 2013, according to latest reports from Spanish contract cleaning association ASPEL.

A total of 16,895 employees did not turn up to their place on at least one occasion in 2016. The assocation's president Juan Díez de los Ríos attributed the rise to the start of the economic crisis.

The average duration of absence due to common eventualities was 54.23 days per completed period compared with 39.97 days for the total of all sectors, representing an interannual increase of 4.65 per cent and 1.71 per cent respectively.

In addition, the average monthly incidence of sick leave for the cleaning sector in 2016 was 30.95 cases per 1,000 workers, this figure exceeding the total of all sectors for 2016 by more than 50 per cent.

ASPEL has announced some other key figures for the Spanish market. The overdue debt of the public administrations to Aspel's companies was €450.2 million, a decrease of 13 per cent compared to the previous year. Nevertheless both the State and the autonomous communities and municipalities continue to fail with to comply with the period for payment to suppliers and companies have to wait more than three months to collect their invoices.

And the sector recruited 6,544 new workers in 2016, the third consecutive year in which the number of employees has increased, following the previous five years of decrease. More than 87,000 jobs were lost in the period between 2008 and 2013.

In terms of the number of companies, this increased for the fifth consecutive year. In 2016 164 new companies were created, mainly deriving from self-employment with a scant labour force and with part-time workers. Of the 17,236 companies in the sector, only 3,959 are active according to the figures provided by Eurosectorial.

Companies represented by ASPEL, which account for 43.8 per cent of the market in terms of employee numbers, invoiced more than €2,439 million - an increase of 0.3 per cent on 2015.
