Sea Life London Aquarium starts the new year with a deep clean

The team at Sea Life London aquarium has been carrying out the annual deep clean, with all of the tanks being spruced up to make sure they are sparkling and ready for some exciting additions arriving in 2017.

Earlier this week a total of 20 aquarists and specialist staff embarked on the mammoth task of cleaning the 64 displays that showcase more than 10,000 aquatic inhabitants. This year the SEA LIFE London team is paying particular attention to the Behind the Scenes area, where six different species jellyfish are currently being bred.

Alongside the New Year clean, Sea Life London has also carried out a fish count to accurately determine how many sea creatures live at the attraction at present. This requires one of the experts to carefully and accurately count the fish from each of the tanks.

Senior curator and jellyologist James Robson, commented: "We of course maintain the cleanliness and sparkling finish of our tanks throughout the year, but our January deep clean has become a bit of a tradition now and we love to make sure the tanks are extra fresh for all of the New Year visitors.

"It's also an opportunity to tot up the number of aquatic animals in the attraction to get visitors excited about the amount of sea life that they will sail past."
