Rome’s Colosseum opens up its top two floors

Following a five-year restoration, the top two floors of the Roman Colosseum are now open to the public for the first time in 40 years.

The project involved spray-cleaning centuries' worth of grime from the walls and removing tons of debris in order to prepare the fourth and fifth levels of the amphitheatre for visitors.

And during their free time in Rome, delegates at the European Cleaning & Hygiene Awards 2017 will be among the first members of the public to receive the chance to visit the top two levels for the first time since the 1970s.

The newly-opened floors are around 40 metres above the ground and provide extensive vistas of the Italian capital. "It is an incredible view that visitors will remember as one of the most beautiful things they have seen in their lives," said Italian culture minister Dario Franceschini.

The fourth and fifth levels of the iconic structure used to house cheaper seats for the lower classes since were further away from the spectacle. Also newly opened is a well-preserved connecting gallery that has never before been open to the public. This incorporates elements of six ancient Roman toilets.

from November 1 it will be possible to book a visit to the top levels of the Colosseum for €9 on top of the cost of entrance to the main site. Reservations will be compulsory and visits will take the form of guided tours.

The European Cleaning & Hygiene Awards 2017 take place on November 9.
