Old £5 notes are seven times dirtier than new polymer ones

As the old UK paper £5 note has become obsolete this month online medical and industry supplier Brosch Direct decided to find out just how dirty old fivers are compared to the shiny new polymer notes.

Five pound notes (six in total, three old and three new) were sent to a laboratory in the UK to undergo a series of hygiene tests in order to determine bacteria levels.

Those tests showed the old five pound notes harboured seven times more bacteria than the new polymer ones - confirming the new polymer versions are a more hygienic choice.

The new polymer £10 note is due for release in September 2017, with a £20 version scheduled for 2020.
