March 2 is European equal pay day

The second European Equal Pay day will take place this Friday, March 2 - in recognition of the fact that on average women have to work 62 days more to earn men's 2011 average annual pay. That's according to the latest gender pay gap figures from Eurostat and represents a difference of 17.1 per cent.

The European Commission has planned a number of activities to raise awareness of the day, including advertisements in national newspapers and an online video in all 22 EU languages. There is also a comprehensive information resource online, and national events are taking place in many member states.
