Liverpool’s council and supporters praised for their cleaning efforts

Praise has poured in for Liverpool council workers who cleared the streets quickly and efficiently after the city's Champion's League victory parade.

Workers faced a massive task in removing debris from the streets after 36 hours of celebrations involving 750,000 people. But the council's cleaning teams were out within minutes of the celebrations ending, causing city councillor Anna Rothery to describe them as: 'the other legends of Liverpool' in a tweet.

According to Liverpool City Council's Twitter feed: "Moments after the #LFCParade our team were out and about, dedicating their evening to cleaning the city. We love their attitude and are privileged to have them as part of our organisation."

Meanwhile, Liverpool fans have been praised for other cleaning initiatives following their team's 2:0 defeat over Tottenham. One group of fans who travelled to Madrid to watch the match joined the city's clean-up operation after the event. "There were some fellas brushing up the square at five in the morning, so some of us started helping them by throwing plastic bottles in the bins," said Liverpool fan David Lloyd.

Fans also came to the rescue when a listed building on Everton Brow was defaced after the match, apparently by revellers. The number "six" was painted on the structure in red in reference to Liverpool's sixth Champions League win.

The graffiti appeared to be a taunt to Everton fans since the 18th century building - a former lock-up - is pictured on Everton's crest and is closely linked to the club's history. But after hearing about the incident, a group of Liverpool fans volunteered to clean off the graffiti themselves.
