German cleaning machines market faces uncertainty

Global economic uncertainty has impacted on Germany's cleaning machine manufacturers since the end of 2018, and sales in the first half of 2019 fell by three per cent. That's according to latest figures from trade association covering the sector, VDMA.

There are around 50 suppliers of cleaning systems for commercial and industrial use in the country, employing approximately 5,400 people there. The export share of German manufacturers amounts to about 71 per cent. The world market share for German suppliers reached almost 20 per cent in 2018; the market share in Europe about 50 per cent.

The year 2019 got off to a stable start in domestic business in the first quarter, says VDMA, but remained below the results of the good first quarter of the previous year.

Foreign business, on the other hand, was turbulent, due to issues such as the trade conflict between the USA and China, and Brexit. Currency fluctuations have also been worrying.

VDMA's study also finds that economic growth in China is currently as weak as it was 30 years ago. In India, on the other hand, the growth rates in the machinery business are still considerable, even though economic growth has lost momentum. The total volume is still too low, however, to compensate for negative trends in other important markets.
