Amsterdam gym suspends bosses in cleaning staff scandal

Managers responsible for cleaning a chain of luxury gyms in Amsterdam have been suspended pending an investigation into the exploitation of cleaners.

Workers from the Philippines and Indonesia were allegedly forced to work up to 17 hours a day and share beds with strangers while cleaning the four branches of the luxury gym chain Saints and Stars.

They were also required to surrender their passports while the company organised their visas and work permits, according to reports. One cleaner claimed she was expected to sleep on the floor of a walk-in closet while others reported working long hours for up to six days a week.

The labour inspectorate confirmed that 23 undocumented workers had been found during recent inspections at a gym chain in Amsterdam without naming the company.

Saints and Stars is owned by 31-year-old Tom Moos who said in a video message that the managers responsible had been suspended pending an investigation into the exploitation of cleaners.

He said the gym had worked with the same cleaning company for years and he was completely unaware of any signs that the staff were being exploited.

And he added that the company had set up its own investigation into the situation and would cooperate fully with the labour inspectorate. "Our mission has always been to create an environment where people feel safe, respected and empowered, not only for our members, but also for our trainers, staff and every individual who contributes to our community," writes Saints and Stars in its official statement.

Well-wishers have launched a crowdfunding campaign for the cleaners which has so far raised €34,000.
