The boss of a cleaning company in the north-east of England has driven a van full of aid for Ukrainian refugees to Poland.

Steven Holmes of Orca Cleaning Services drove the 1,680km to Medyka in Poland. He said watching the news of the Russian invasion had spurred him to action and he had been inundated with toys, clothes and medical supplies from generous locals.

"I feel like I've opened a door and people ran through it," Holmes said.

"People have really stepped up to the plate."
