Family company Cleenol named among the top 100 Best Places to Work

The people manning Cleenol stand 01.235 were particularly bright and chirpy today, with staff members accosting passers-by to talk to them about their chemicals.

It turns out they had good reason to be happy. On Sunday It was announced that Cleenol - based in the UK - had been included in the list of the Sunday Times Best Places to Work.

The company has changed dramatically since CEO and owner Sam Greaves bought it from his father and grandfather five years ago, however. "There was a toxic culture with reports of bullying, theft and fraud," he said.

When Greaves took over he removed the middle management tier and introduced various changes. "All staff members now finish work at midday on Friday and receive 30 days' holiday a year," he said. They also have access to healthy nutrition, better parental leave and they are offered a free meeting with a financial advisor every month."

Cleenol has been in operation for 75 years and claims to be one of the last family-run cleaning companies in the business. Its products include air fresheners, toilet cleaners and surface cleaners such as the Evolution X2 system. This combines a concentrated chemical cleaner with a water bottle, and the water automatically dilutes the chemical as the operator sprays,.

Cleenol sent in an application for the Sunday Times listing and all staff members were sent a questionnaire. More than 90 per cent responded, and 83 per cent claimed to be happy and engaged at work.

Greaves has no idea where the company features in the top 100 list, though he knows it is not in the top 10.

He is very proud nonetheless. "Our inclusion helps to build confidence that we are on the right path," he said. "Output is up and people are smiling."
