New products - matting
15th of September 2010As part of this edition's special report, a look at the latest products available.
More than a barrier
According to Steiner a matting system can be much more than a simple barrier against dirt. It can also promote a corporate image through use of logos and publicity slogans.
The company offers mats in a wide range of colours and with almost photographic image quality. It recommends mats are placed outside to create a barrier against heavy soiling; inside entrances to prevent light soiling and moisture; and at any locations inside the building where there is heavy traffic (in front of a reception area for example) or in zones with specific requirements.

Entrance Nomad
Boasting maximum water absorbency is 3M's Nomad Aqua Plus entrance matting. The top layer consists of an absorbent and permeable patented polyamide or polypropylene dual-fibre tuft. Its larger texturised coarse fibres remove dirt while the smaller fine fibres absorb excess water, improving resistance to traffic.
It is the middle layer which is responsible for the water absorption and retention - between 3.7 and 5.5 litres per square metre. The mat features the 3M-patented 3D void structure that is permeable and water-resistant to drain water away more efficiently, incorporating a mildew-resistant draining fleece.
Nomad Aqua Plus's third layer is an impervious backing incorporating 50 per cent recycled polymers which can be vacuumed easily. The slip-resistant low-profile backing sticks to the
ground so the matting is always secure and not easily lifted up by foot traffic.

Logo growth
According to Mountville Mills, logo mats represent the fastest growing sector in the European mat industry. The company has introduced the SuperScrape Impressions range which it claims are the first ever outdoor mats with unlimited graphic capabilities.
The all-rubber mats are produced by moulding a digitally printed thermo-plastic material into a heavy-duty Nitrile rubber. The image is said to be permanent and will not wear off or fade when exposed to sunlight.
Mats are available in 75 x 85 cm, 85 x 150 cm and 115 x 180 cm sizes.

Microfibre structure
DustStar microfibre entrance mats are made from 70 per cent microfibre and 30 per cent polypropylene fibres. Produced by Crown Mats and Matting, this construction maximises their cleaning capability.
According to Crown Mats, the abrasiveness of the mat fibre removes dirt from shoes extremely effectively and the dirt is then held inside the mat until it is cleaned.
