Will ‘Stop the Germs!’ be a Christmas stocking hit this Christmas?

Two US entrepreneurs have devised a tabletop game designed to heighten awareness of the ease with which germs are spread.

Stop the Germs! is packaged in a portable prescription pill bottle and consists of 30 tiles, two reference sheets and instructions. Two players take it in turns to place, flip and move their tiles adjacent to one another.

The goal is to have more germ tiles face up than one's opponent and players can use three special tiles to stop their rival from growing germs. The player who has the most number of germ points at the end of the game is the winner.

Described as a fast-paced strategy game, Stop the Germs! has been devised by Daniel Isom, who works for the Delaware Division of Public Health, and game designer Jeremy Peet. The two met via a board game website and are now hoping their creation will be a refreshing alternative to computer-based games.

"We aren't together when we play video games," said Isom. "Stop the Germs! brings everyone back to the table. It's a family-friendly game that brings that social aspect back."

Stop the Germs! is being crowd-funded and the developers hope it will be on sale by Christmas. Around 500 copies will be sold online and at niche hobby stores.
