Restaurant staff filmed cleaning plates in a dirty puddle

A Kuala Lumpur restaurant has been threatened with closure after staff were filmed cleaning plates in a puddle outside the premises.

Footage posted online depicts restaurant workers at Raj's Banana Leaf restaurant sitting by the side of the road outside the premises, which is situated in the suburb of Bangsar. And they can be clearly seen washing dishes in a muddy puddle.

A spokesman for the restaurant said: "We would like to apologise for an unfortunate incident by our newly-recruited staffs at our Bangsar outlet recently.

"This has never happened before and should not have happened. We are very sorry for the regrettable actions by our new staff and understand that is not acceptable. We also want to assure you that Raj's Banana Leaf consistently passes the health inspections conducted regularly."

Kuala Lumpur mayor Tan Sri Mhd Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz now says the restaurant will be shut until it adheres to city council regulations.

A number of shocking hygiene lapses in publicly-used facilities have recently come to light since it has become common practice to post covert footage to social media.

In October 17, a concerned employee at a Midland branch of sandwich chain Subway filmed the branch manager taking bread out of the bin and then serving it to customers.

And in December 2017, cleaners at a number of luxury hotels in China were caught on camera cleaning guests' tea cups with toilet brushes which they afterwards used to scrub the toilet and bath.
