Proper disinfection could prevent hospital infections, says Spanish cleaning association

Opting for a cleaning tender combining a preventative disinfection protocol and the latest technology would be the best remedy for preventing patients admitted to, or visiting, Spanish healthcare facilities from contracting pneumonia, urinary, skin or blood infections, among other infections.

That's according to contract cleaning association ASPEL, which says that more than five per cent of people coming into contact with healthcare facilities will contract an infection there.

President Juan Diez de los Ríos explained that in contract award processes the evaluation of tenders for services barely gives any weight to the delivery of new models of provision or the implementation of new resources which offer an improvement in care quality for users, their families or the employees themselves

"What is sought is short-term financial saving rather than improvement in efficacy and efficiency," he said. "The quality and degree of disinfection and cleaning in the medium and long term suffer."

The average cost of treating a patient with a hospital-acquired infection is around €15,000.
