Hotel chain pledges to recycle a million bars of soap

Hotel chain Hilton is pledging to recycle a million bars of soap by Global Handwashing Day on October 15.

The chain has joined forces with Clean the World in a move to recycle soap bars left behind in hotel guest rooms.

Hilton's brands - which include Embassy Suites, Hilton Garden Inn, Hampton by Hilton and All Suites - have been taking part in toiletry recycling projects for some years. Staff are tasked with collecting the half-used bars of soap left behind by guests and sending them to Clean the World, a not-for-profit organisation that helps hotels to recycle their toiletries. The soap is then crushed, sanitised and formed into new bars.

Hilton brands have collected more than 7.6 million bars of recycled soap over the past 10 years. As part of its goal to cut its environmental footprint in half by 2030 the chain has committed to send zero soap to landfill.

Hilton also helps recycle lotion and shampoo bottles for reuse as containers for travel-sized hygiene products. And according to global chief Bill Duncan, it was among the first hotel chains to participate in a toiletries recycling project. Other participants in the Clean the World scheme include Hyatt, Marriott and Best Western.

Clean the World has distributed more than 48 million bars of soap to over 127 countries since it was founded in 2009. According to the World Health Organisation, millions of young lives could be saved if more people had access to bar soap and hygiene education.
