Hand hygiene handbook to be published

An authoritative new book on hand hygiene in healthcare is due to be published this autumn.

Hand Hygiene: A Handbook for Medical Professionals offers a global perspective on hand hygiene issues in both developed and developing countries.

Compiled by world leaders in the topic, the book integrates World Health Organisation's guidelines into a broader discussion on hand hygiene. It covers practices in both basic and highly complex clinical applications and offers guidance at individual, institutional and organisational level for carrying out national and worldwide hygiene promotion campaigns.

Fundamentals such as the flora and physiology of normal skin is explored along with the burden of healthcare-associated infections and the dynamics of hand transmission. Other topics covered include methods of evaluating the antimicrobial efficacy of hand hygiene agents; good hand hygiene techniques; barriers to compliance and the economic impact of improved hand hygiene.

The book also looks at ways of marketing hand hygiene and monitoring compliance in healthcare settings. And it considers religious and cultural differences and the ways in which these might impact the hand hygiene challenge.

Authors include Didier Pittet, professor of medicine and hospital epidemiology at the University of Geneva; John Boyce, clinical professor of medicine at the Yale University School of Medicine, and Benedetta Allegranzi, who works at the World Health Organisation and is part of the infection control programme at University of Geneva hospitals.

The authors of Hand Hygiene: A Handbook for Medical Professionals believe the book will become an essential resource for medical personnel. Published by Wiley-Blackwell, it will be released in November.
