Cleaning crews play key role in reopening UK university cities

A rigorous cleaning regime including deep cleaning, hot washing, steam cleaning and sanitising all street furniture has been put in place in Oxford.

These are among a series of measures being rolled out to keep people safe in the UK university city as it reopens for business.

Cleaning crews employed by ODS - owned by Oxford City Council - kitted out in full protective gear have been out on the streets from 5.30am to 7pm. City centre toilets have now reopened and ODS operatives are cleaning them hourly in a new regime that includes the sanitisation of all door handles.

The team is also thoroughly cleaning the areas beneath outdoor benches and between bike racks - work that was previously carried out using a broom and cold water.

City council cabinet member Nigel Chapman said: "We are welcoming shoppers back to Oxford and while they may find the shopping experience a bit different, they can be sure that the council and its ODS partners will be making the city centre as clean and sanitised as it possibly can be." Oxford is also introducing one-way pavements to aid social distancing.

Meanwhile, fellow university city Cambridge has been busy widening footways and introducing new systems to manage foot-flow in a bid to improve shoppers' safety. And hand sanitiser dispensers are being placed at the entry and exit points of all major city centre retail precincts, while enhanced touch-point cleaning has been put in place in buses to ensure the safety of passengers.
