For the last two years, most government primary schools in the district of Gurgaon in India have not had cleaning staff. As a result, schools have dirty premises and foul-smelling toilets - reports the Times of India.

Officials at the education department said almost 90 per cent of the district's government primary and middle schools do not have cleaning staff. Tarun Suhag, president of the district primary teachers' association said: "Teachers and students either clean the premises themselves, or the schools sometimes get temporary help to do the work."

A senior education official added: "It's been over a year since posts were sanctioned for part-time workers. The government is not appointing any Class IV employees for cleaning and maintenance work." Many school heads are paying from their own pockets to hire temporary staff.

Many schools are trying to arrange funds through donations or corporate CSR.
