Commitments made at toilet summit |
Delegates from around the world gathered in Singapore at the end of last year for the World Toilet Summit & Expo - discussing a range of sanitation issues affecting urban and rural communities.
The main focus of the event was making some progress towards providing affordable toilets for rural communities with no access to proper sanitation: an estimated 2.5 billion people. For the first time a Memorandum of Understanding was actually signed during the summit, with Singapore’s Rigel Technology, to develop toilets for these markets.
Rigel has already produced a prototype of a low-cost squat toilet that is easily deployed without the need to be connected to a conventional sewerage system. The solid waste is composted and re-used as fertiliser, while the liquid waste is piped out separately.
Sylvia Phua, chief executive officer of MP Asia, one of the event organisers, commented: "“The benefits of this event are many-fold, with solutions being found for all communities in what many of us take to be a basic human necessity."
