Toilet summit sets sanitation target |
The World Toilet Summit and Expo 2008 (WTSE 2008) took place in Macao, China, last month and set new targets in tackling sanitation challenges around the world. Among these are promoting clean toilets in poor areas and improving hygiene standards in developing countries.
The three-day event attracted 250 delegates from around the world – including government and United Nation agencies, NGOs, sanitation groups and other leading industry players. Jack Sim, founder of the World Toilet Organisation (WTO) and organiser of the event, gave the welcome address.
He said: “When we talk about sanitation we are talking about a market of 2.5 billion people, and today’s market is dysfunctional - mainly due to muted demand and low priority among individuals. A market-based approach is needed to address the problem on a large scale, at the grassroots level.”
Topics discussed included community, government and private sector perspectives on sanitation; differences and considerations involved in developing toilets in rural versus urban developments; tourism sanitation; disaster sanitation and capacity building.
The conference was accompanied by an exhibition featuring the latest in toilet and sanitation solutions, including dry toilet technology and self-contained portable washroom facilities.
