Drink-driver blames hand wash
dec4.jpgA doctor in New Zealand has been convicted of drink-driving, despite blaming an alcohol-based hand wash he used at work.

Ian Denholm said the surgical hand wash had put him over the legal limit and he pleaded not guilty to the charge. The orthopaedic surgeon was fined and had his licence suspended for six months.

When he was pulled over last year, Denholm admitted to having up to two glasses of wine and recorded a breath alcohol level over the legal limit when tested. The doctor then claimed his eczema condition meant his skin could absorb alcohol in the hand wash gel he used to scrub up after operations.
